Abstract

In this work, we propose a neural network model of the ventral visual stream for 3D object recognition and classification. The model represents a hierarchy of modules, which resemble the V1–V4 areas and inferior temporal cortex (IT). The architecture of our model is based on the modular network self-organized map (SOM). The model has been trained to perform object recognition and classification tasks that were reported to occur in the ventral visual stream in the brain of macaque monkeys. We show by simulation that the model is capable of classifying artificial three dimensional (3D) objects according to their structural similarity and of achieving view-invariant recognition of the objects
